Cities Development
Cities Policy
- The Initiative supported the development of Scotland’s Cities: Delivering for Scotland, a Scottish Government publication setting out the contributions that Scotland's cities can make to delivering the aspirations of the Government Economic Strategy.
- Additional funding for Scottish cities through the creation of the £5 million Cities Investment Fund in December 2011.
- Formal policy recognition of the importance of Collaboration between Glasgow and Edinburgh in the Government Economic Strategy and National Planning Framework 2
- GECI brought together representatives from 14 UK cities to a successful two-day UK Cities Conference held in Edinburgh, enabling the cities to strengthen ties with the Core Cities network and other UK cities
Infrastructure Funding
- The Initiative facilitated a meeting between the First Minister and the Leaders and senior officials of both City Councils to discuss the potential for the cities to work together to pilot the use of innovation funding for large scale infrastructure projects
- Good practice sharing on TIF by City Development Directors
- Joint city evidence presented to Westminster all party group on Urban Development regarding the use of TIF
- GECI brought together representatives from the two city business parnerships Edinburgh Business Leadership Forum and Glasgow Economic Partnership to discuss key issues facing the cities and focus on activities that collaboratively will improve the productivity of the two cities and ensure targets set out in the Government Economic Strategy are delivered
Sustainability
- Glasgow and Edinburgh Sustainable Development teams brought together to share goodpractice and consider the Scottish Government's Climate Change Delivery Plan and review where the two cities, acting together, could add value to what they are seeking to do individually
- A joint city workshop on delivering sustainable heat brought together key players in carbon reduction to address the routes which offer the best potential for implementing sustainable heating
Strategic Planning
- Glasgow and Edinburgh Strategic Planning teams brought together to share good practice
- The Initiative is a member of the Interim Steering Group for Central Scotland Green Network (CSGN)
- Study visits of both cities were organised for ecomomic development and planning colleagues of the two councils and Scottish Enterprise to increase awareness of each cities strategic development sites and their complimentary assets
