Cities unite for Hogmanay

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

Two of Scotland’s world-class Hogmanay street parties, Glasgow and Edinburgh, have announced that the chart topping Scottish band, The Fratellis, will play in both cities on the same night.

The joint collaboration between both city events will see The Fratellis entertain the masses in Glasgow before heading along the M8 to thousands of fans at the Waverley Stage at Edinburgh’s Royal Bank Street Party.

Laura Gordon, the Glasgow-Edinburgh Collaboration Director, said that partnership working is as much about cultural and social ties between Scotland’s largest cities as economic and transport links. She added: “Glasgow is internationally recognised for its music scene. It’s fantastic that Hogmanay audiences in both Edinburgh and Glasgow will have the opportunity to enjoy one of the country’s exciting new talents.”

The Fratellis added: “We’re really pleased that we are able to perform at both the Edinburgh and Glasgow Hogmanay celebrations on the same night, which is amazing. It’s a great way to end what’s been an incredible year for us.”

Welcoming the announcement, Liz Cameron, the Lord Provost of Glasgow said: “This is wonderful news and shows the spirit of Hogmanay stretching from the Forth to the Clyde. We’re planning an outstanding line-up at George Square and I’m delighted that The Fratellis will be helping us to celebrate the New Year.”

Lesley Hinds, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, echoed the sentiment. She said: “What better forum to showcase the talents of Scotland’s hottest bands than at the world’s most famous Hogmanay party in Edinburgh.”

The Fratellis are widely regarded as one of the best new bands in Scotland. Jon, Barry and Mince – all from Glasgow – have most recently supported The Who at the Roundhouse in Camden in London as part of the BBC Electric Proms.

Pete Irvine, Director of Unique Events, which produces Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, added: “We were onto The Fratellis back in the spring when it seemed obvious that they were going to be huge. But they are a Glasgow band and they are celebrating their brilliant debut album, so we’re delighted that we’ve got an artist that is going to play both cities.”
