Tourist trails of two cities

Glasgow and Edinburgh are Scotland’s international gateways, accounting for half the income generated from overseas tourists. The cities are increasingly being recognised as complementary assets in the competition for a greater share of the growing urban tourism market - as demonstrated by the recent launch of twin-city tours.

The Sunday Herald decided to take a tourist trip around each city, to see how they compared, contrasted and what tourists in each thought about the other. Read more…

Cities targeted for transport investment

The new High Level Output Statement (HLOS) for Scotland’s railways prioritises a number of improvements to the network between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

In addition to completion of the Glasgow Airport Rail Link and the Airdrie-Bathgate restoration, which will provide another link between the cities, the HLOS outlines a number of medium-term priorities for action, including the electrification of the Glasgow-Edinburgh main line, effective rail connections to Edinburgh Airport, and enhanced services on the Glasgow-Edinburgh via Shotts route.

Cities top tourism table

Glasgow and Edinburgh are sharing the lead as top tourism destinations.

In recent years, Glasgow has seen its tourism sector grow steadily to a point where it complements Edinburgh’s historic strengths on an equal footing.

Glasgow Caledonian University’s Professor John Lennon noted that “The beauty is, we have two cities, two very strong and different products, just 40 minutes apart. “Separately they perform well but together they would be unbeatable. Few places in Europe could offer what they could provide together.”

Twin-city tours start

Laura Gordon, Director of the Glasgow-Edinburgh collaboration initiative has given her backing to a new tour of the two cities.

The ‘Twin City Treasures’ tour will be run by Timberbush Tours until October.
