Rail improvements on track

The Scottish Government has been advised that the rail connection to Edinburgh Airport should involve a new station at Gogar with a short tram connection to the airport terminal. This scheme would succeed the EARL (Edinburgh Airport Rail Link) scheme. Read more…

The airport connection is part of a package of measures which will create a “super corridor” between Scotland’s largest cities, with up to 15 trains per hour serving a greater number of intermediate stations - while the potential for non-stop city-to-city services is also being examined. More cities’ tourism success

Glasgow and Edinburgh have retained their place among the top 5 UK cities, according to Conde Nast Traveller. One or other of Scotland’s largest cities has taken top place in the survey over most of the past nine years. Read more…

It isn’t just Conde Nast Traveller readers who are discovering of Glasgow and Edinburgh, it seems. The cities have seen their greatest ever number of international visitors, with over 1.3 million visiting Edinburgh and three-quarters of a million visiting Glasgow in 2006. Read more…

The two cities are increasingly seeing each other as a positive asset in their individual tourism ‘offer’, with the likes of “twin-city tours” being offered. Read more…

New research has showed the value of cities working together for success.

Many cities around the world are now collaborating to compete. The Glasgow-Edinburgh collaboration initiative has commissioned research into who is doing what, where, and with ends in mind. You can download the Executive Summary below.

Econonic Collaboration Report

Cities from across the UK met recently to discuss these findings and discuss issues of collaboration at an event sponsored by Glasgow and Edinburgh. Read articles about the collaboration event which took place on 12 September 2007 published in the Scotsman, Scottish Property Network and the Sunday Herald.

The task of fostering collaboration between Scotland’s largest cities lies with Laura Gordon. Read a profile of her role in ‘The Scotsman’ and an interview with Laura.

The importance of national government’s support for cities, including allowing them greater freedoms, has also been highlighted in a recent article by Professor Ivan Turok of the University of Glasgow.
