The purpose of the event is to update colleagues on the work of the Glasgow : Edinburgh Collaboration Initiative, share the most recent intelligence on the performance of the cities and to begin to explore the potential of greater city region working. There will be a particular focus on recent work commissioned on the wider economic benefits for Scotland of high speed rail connections to London and other UK cities.
At the start of the 21st century a new global environment presents a range of challenges and opportunities, including economic recession, increasing competition and environmental priorities. The event will focus on how to fulfil the potential of the cities and surrounding regions, including considering the opportunities created by the development of a more integrated economic space around and between the two cities.
The event has been designed to stimulate thinking and facilitate discussion around the key drivers, challenges and opportunities facing the Glasgow : Edinburgh city regions. Critically, priorities, policy options and specific actions will be considered. The intention is to consider not only economic resilience but also to look ahead to provide a platform and direction for longer term policy and intervention.
Guest speakers will include:
The return of BAK Basel Economics to Scotland is very welcome to provide a unique international perspective on the performance of the two city region economies, their industrial potential and transport accessibility. Additionally, SLIMS will focus on the role and performance of the two city economies at the core of the city regions.
